The member organizations of the Civic Initiative for the Integrity in Public Service, have signed a joint statement condemning the attitude of the National Integrity Commission (CNI) manifested by the decision to close the case on the judge Mariana Pitic on the infringement of the legal regime of declaration of income and property for 2015, writes anticoruptie.md.

The signatories of the statement claim that "in this case the NIC acted in contradiction with its own objective of preventing and combating illicit enrichment and corruption among civil servants." They believe that accepting the declaration by officials of fictitious amounts of assets owned will encourage the spread of this practice.

The reaction of the organization comes a day after the NIC decision to close the case started on the judge Mariana Pitic, after it would have found that the judge unintentionally violated the legal regime of declaration of income and property for 2015.

On the other hand, Victor Stratila, the Vice President of the NIC, wrote on his Facebook page that the institution did not let itself to be influenced by the media and respected the principle of legality, impartiality and the right to defence.

We remind that Mariana Pitic got targeted by NIC following an article of ZdG in March 2016, according to which in her latest financial declaration the judge did not indicate the fortune of her husband, a successful businessman, owning a luxury real estate near Chisinau and indicated a  Porsche car worth only 11 thousand lei.

In concluding the declaration, the signatories called for the NIC "to perform its duties with utmost responsibility and to examine more thoroughly the causes on alleged violation of the legal regime of declaring the income and property”.

The Civic Initiative for Integrity in Public Service was launched by five NGOs: the Soros Foundation, Independent Press Association, the Centre for Analysis and Prevention of Corruption, Association for Participatory Democracy and the Centre for Investigative Journalism to increase control over the integrity of persons holding leadership positions in public institutions, monitoring the effectiveness of the mechanism of verification of their assets and interests.
