The crime was discovered yesterday, and an internal investigation was initiated to check the involvement of customs officials in the smuggling scheme.
Following the preliminary investigations, investigators have determined that the Customs Service Inspector exceeded his duties, allowing the passage of such consignments of goods without payment of import duties.
Prosecution actions were initiated with respect to the officer, who is charged with exceeding duties, resulting in serious consequences. If found guilty, he risks imprisonment of 6 to 10 years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for a period of 10 to 15 years.
At the same time, actions are taken to determine if other employees of public authorities with the right to carry out border controls were involved in the scheme.
