A 51-year-old man from Nisporeni and his 27-year-old son risk a 5-year prison sentence or a fine of up to 58,000 lei for illicit recovery of sand in the outskirts of Milesti, Nisporeni district.
The District Prosecutor's Office has finalized and sent to court the criminal case against the two men. They will be prosecuted for violating the requirements of mineral resources protection, which has caused serious consequences, as well as illegal entrepreneurial activity that brought large-scale profits.
According to the prosecutors, the defendants, holding no license, illegally recovered sand from the outskirts of the village of Milesti, obtaining a profit of over 1 million lei in the period of 2011-2017. The men excavated 4770 cubic meters of sand on 11 hectares of agricultural land. Later, the defendants sold the sand to individuals and legal entities. Among the buyers of illegally recovered sand, there was an economic agent, who benefited from the Drinking Water Supply Project of the locality. He is suspected of tax evasion.
Currently, the two men are forbidden to leave the town. At the same time, the mobile assets, real estate facilities and other values of the accused have been seized for recovery of environmental damage.
Prosecutors are also investigating several officials, who allegedly protected the illegal activities of the defendants. Police officers, representatives of the Ecological Inspection of the Nisporeni District and the mayor of the locality are investigated within the same case.
