Three detainees aged between 50 and 63 years and living in Chișinău were suspected of illegal trade of toxic substances that are contraband goods. The suspects were detained for 30 days.
As a result of the investigation, the staff of the Division of Economic Crimes of the National Inspectorate in common with the General Prosecutor's Office determined that the suspects transferred from the Russian Federation to the Republic of Moldova 20 kg of toxic substances - white Mercury, whose cost is estimated at more than 1.2 million lei.
The radioactive substance was stored in the territory of Moldova with the purpose of further distribution, thereby creating a of serious danger to people and the environment.
Thus, the police on February 3 this year raided the homes and cars of suspects, where they have found: white mercury, mobile phones, notebook with phone numbers, projects of documents, 8 stones of different sizes similar to gems, technical documentation on mercury and other radioactive and chemicals substances.
On this occasion, it was a criminal case according to para. 5, art. 248 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova. Under the law, persons guilty of "contraband" can be imprisoned for a term of 3 to 10 years.
