Another official from the Directorate of Penitentiary Institutions (DPI) was arrested. The former head of the Prison №1 of Taraclia Igor Banu was arrested by the NAC officers and the anticorruption prosecutors in the “Prison №5 of Cahul” case. He is accused of the abuse of power. Previously on the same case were arrested the former head of the Prison №5 of Cahul Alexandru Malina and his lawyer Andrei Dunas. They are accused of the abuse of power and the extortion of 16 000 euro and 13 300 dollars from the mother of a prisoner, who was sentenced to 18 years of the imprisonment.
In the 2014-2016 period the suspects allegedly asked from the prisoner's mother money saying they can get a special medical certificate from the DPI Medical Commission that her son has a serious illness. Because of such certificate he could be early released.
The Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office will continue the investigation. There can be detected more suspects.
In the 2014 wealth declaration Igor Banu declared only his and his wife salaries (77 510 lei and 40 696 lei). He hadn’t declared any immovable or movable property, any financial assets or shareholding. In the 2013 in the wealth declaration he declared the income from salary worth 92 323 lei, a house worth 67 471 lei and a car worth 10 000 lei.
