Border officers discovered yesterday evening, more than 200 coins with an age of up to 300 years, at a foreign citizen in Chisinau International Airport.
The coins were found after scanning the passengers' hold baggage of flight Chisinau-Dublin, which revealed the presence of suspicious objects in one of the bags. As a result of its physical control, the border officers, together with border guards discovered 207 coins dating from the period 1700-1990, with a great cultural and historical value.
The goods belonged to a citizen of Ukraine, aged 45, who was detained for a period of 72 hours.
Investigations are continuing by specialized subdivisions of the Border Service, the case is a criminal case filed for smuggling. If found guilty, the citizen of Ukraine risks punishment by imprisonment of 3 to 10 years.
According to the procedure, the coins were taken and sent for expertise to the National History Museum of Moldova.
