A 45-year-old resident of Chisinau has been sentenced to three years of imprisonment at the prosecutors’ request, although he previously escaped only with a non-deprivation sentence. He is accused of having served in the period of June 2015 - March 2017 as a mercenary in the militarized detachment called 1st Slavic Brigade in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
The man was detained by the Chisinau Prosecutor's Office and the Information Security Service (ISS) in the autumn of 2017.
On November 3, 2017, the Chisinau District Court found him guilty and sentenced him to a suspended term of three years, the man being released from custody.
Considering the sentence too soft, the prosecutors challenged it to the Chisinau Court of Appeal, which recently decided to convict the defendant to 3 years of imprisonment with execution.
The decision of the Court of Appeal may be challenged to the Supreme Court of Justice.
