Deputy Minister of Finance, Maria Caraus, detained by the officers of the National Anticorruption Center for passive and active corruption, has been suspended from office. The decision was adopted by the Government Wednesday, October 11.
According to the decision, as required by the prosecutors, Caraus was suspended from office for the time of investigation.
Last week, the anticorruption officers and prosecutors arrested Maria Caraus and three businessmen for trying to trig several public auctions. Currently, they are being investigated for passive and active corruption. The Deputy Minister and two businessmen are under arrest, and the fourth person accused in this case has been released as he accepted to collaborate with the investigation and signed a reconciliation agreement.
If found guilty, both Caraus and the businessmen detained risk up to 15 years of imprisonment with a fine of up to 500 thousand lei and deprivation of the right to hold certain public positions for 10 to 15 years.
