According to the state institutions, 1086 citizens from Moldova became victims of human trafficking in the period of January 2011 - July 2015.
These figures are mentioned in the Global Report on Human Trafficking, developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The authos of the document also show that in the last two years the number of men trafficked for forced labor or begging almost doubled.
Of the total number of victims, four were trafficked in for the purpose of organ removal and 520 were sexually exploited.
The authors also show that until 2014, about 70 percent of the human trafficking victims in Moldova were women, but in 2015-2016, every second victim of trafficking, identified by authorities, was male. Also, according to the report, in Moldova, mostly girls are victims of trafficking in children.
An anti-trafficking hotline with the number 0800 77777, is operating in Moldova, implemented by the International Center “La Strada” Moldova. In the 15 years of its existence, the center employees have received nearly one hundred thousand calls, including requests for help from people later recognized as victims of human trafficking.
